Who applies at a mission?

Any Vietnamese citizen who is abroad (Article 16 of the Law on Exit and Entry of Vietnamese Citizens), including people who also hold another nationality. If you have no Vietnamese document yet, show your foreign document together with proof of Vietnamese nationality. Ordinary passports cannot be extended — when one expires, you apply for a new passport.

Documents

  • Application form TK02 (ordinary passport issued abroad).
  • Two 4x6 cm photos, white background, taken within 6 months.
  • Your old passport if you have it; if it was lost, the loss report (form TK05).
  • Children under 14: copy of the birth certificate; a parent or guardian signs the form.
  • Some missions also ask for proof of residence in the host country — check your mission's page.

Steps

  1. Find the mission

First passport: the Vietnamese embassy or consulate in your country of residence. Later passports: any mission convenient for you.

  2. Fill in form TK02

The application form for passports issued abroad, with two 4x6 cm white-background photos and your old passport if you have one.

  3. Submit and pay

In person or by post, depending on the mission. For a first chip passport you must attend for photos and fingerprints.

  4. Collect your passport

5 working days (first passport) or 3 working days (later passports) when no verification is needed; longer if checks are required.

Lost your passport abroad?

  • Within 2 working days, file a loss report (form TK05) at a Vietnamese mission or online. The passport is cancelled and cannot be restored even if found.
  • Some countries and missions also ask for a police report from the host country.
  • To fly home quickly, apply for a fast-track passport: about 2 working days, valid up to 12 months, single use for entering Vietnam.
  • Staying abroad: apply for a regular replacement passport with the loss report.
